The Place of Prayer

Do you live from the Secret Place of Prayer?  Prayer is so much more than the one-way constant chatter that we are so fond of as Christians.  Prayer is more than communication, more than communion, even more than connection with our God.  Prayer is so much more than we make of it.

We spend most of our prayer life gabbing endlessly at our God and getting nothing back.  Make no mistake our God speaks and He is prolific.  Last year across a span of two months I wrote over four hundred prayers.  Holy Spirit was teaching me the power of prayer.  I wrote prayers of desolation, distress, supplication, consolation, hope, affirmation, revelation, restoration, consecration.. there are so many categories of prayer, so many uses, so many ways to pray.  Prayer is a powerful and potent thing.

In my own journey I have found prayer to be amazing.  Prayer soothes my spirit, calms my fears, builds my faith.  Prayer strengthens and sustains me. Prayer nurtures, guides and counsels me. Prayer heals me, physically, spiritually, mentally, psychologically and emotionally.

Prayer has changed my entire perspective on life.  Prayer has empowered me to do things I did not know were possible.  Prayer has defined my purpose and equipped me for it.  Prayer has given me the grace to start walking in it, even while yet in the trenches.

There are so many gifts I have received through prayer I could probably generate another five hundred pages.  Yet today I learned something new about prayer.  As I share, may you come to a new appreciation for this beautiful gift, that is so commonplace and yet so poorly understood.

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’   Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” – Psalm 91:1-4

I went into prayer needing to just curl up under Papa’s wing and abide for a while.  Through prayer I get to abide in His secret place.  I learned today, prayer IS the secret place.

Prayer is not an exchange of words or a mode of communication.  Prayer is a spiritual state, a very vibrant and active place.

In spirit I see prayer pulsing like an amoeba.  It’s essence is like the smoke that curls up from a stick of incense.  I struggled to grasp what I was seeing so Spirit gave me a series of analogues, describing the nature of prayer.

Picture if you would, a utilities cable coming into your home, and it has the ability to carry all your utilities on one line.  It brings in power to actuate the energy of your life, it brings in light to illuminate your path and enlighten your consciousness.  It brings in water for your sustenance and nurturance, as well as for your outflow and overflow.

It brings in internet for connectivity, which gives you access to your external world and also to internal worlds, realms and dimensions.  It brings in cable for information, education and entertainment.   Through prayer, His divine power gives us everything we need for life.  Literally.

Yet there is more.

Prayer is not just the trunk connecting your house to the divine network, it is the backbone of the network.  I have seen the body of Christ as a network of souls spanning the earth just like the internet, each node representing one soul which is inter-connected with all the others.  Prayer not only connects you to your God, but to the worldwide network of believers.  When you are in prayer you are not one, you are a host.

Prayer is the cell tower that receives, transmits and relays signals between our realm and spirit.  I heard in spirit ‘ET phone home’.  How beautifully appropriate.  Prayer is our phone line that connects us to home.  Two-way, synchronous, real-time communication and the network has no downtime.

Yet there is more.

I see an air traffic control tower with many operatives busily routing and rerouting incoming and outgoing traffic.  Prayer is the convergence zone in which so many things are happening.  Timelines converge in the place of prayer, energy converges, power converges, divine entities converge.  They bargain and negotiate, they intercede, they try our cases and execute judgement.  There is so much going on in our place of prayer.  It is the place where our world overlaps with the heavens.  It is a marketplace, a courthouse, a train station, an airport and so much more.

It is the claims counter at which you present your ticket, it is the place to pick up your packages.  It is the filling station and convenience store where you can pick up your roadmap and provisions for your journey.

I see a lone figure standing by a mile marker, I see a vehicle stop and deliver a package.  Prayer is a place of divine appointments and encounters.  It is the place to meet your miracle.

Yet there is more.

“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you.” – Psalm 91: 5-7

Prayer is a vehicle that encapsulates you.  It’s like stepping into an armor plated Hummer.  Prayer is not just access to your place of refuge, it is a vehicle that gets you there and protects you along the way.  Prayer is a conveyance, it moves.  When you go into prayer you don’t stay in your closet or your room, you travel.

You travel through dimensions and time, you may visit the Celestial City, you may view the Book of Life, you may meet angels and archangels, you may receive revelation or divine tutelage.  The place of prayer is a rich land with many inhabitants, places and experiences.

Yet there is more.

Prayer is a place of transformation.  It is a place of healing of whatever ails, even the things you are not aware of.  You may need to heal diabetes,  you go into prayer and Holy Spirit performs surgery on your heart.  You may want to heal your finances, Holy Spirit leads you through an exercise of emotional release.

As complicated as our lives feel to us, the fabric of our existence is far more complex and intricately intertwined than we realize.  We get impatient when we don’t see breakthroughs immediately, we think our prayers are not working.  Prayer always works.  Prayer is a very busy and industrious place.

Prayer ALWAYS works.

The thing you are focused on is rarely the thing that needs to be healed most urgently.  In the place of prayer your teams get to work and rebuild your life from the inside out.  They may even rebuild you, from the inside out.

Here is the true power of prayer.  God is working in us and for us all day everyday but we miss it.  We focus on what we can see and obsess about it, we are totally unaware of what goes on beneath the surface.  Which is a pity because when we recognize and consciously engage with God's will in prayer, the power of that prayer is amplified exponentially.

I will share one more vision, the escalator.

You’re in the airport, you get on one of those moving walkways and you stand still.  It will take you where you need to go.  But some are impatient, they grab their bags and start walking.  These people will get there faster.  As long as they are moving in the direction of the flow they get there before all others.  Of course if they turn and go against the flow,  they pretty much end up stationary until they tire themselves out, stop moving and the flow takes them once more in the right direction.

“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.   In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” - Psalm 91: 11-12

Prayer is a point of rendezvous.  You get to check in with your God, line up with His heart, and walk in the direction of His flow.  You will get there so much faster and it's going to be a much more comfortable ride.  It’s like flying first class.  You get nicer seats, extra blankets, fine food, a selection of wines.  Angel Airways has top class in-flight service,  their attendants will make you as comfortable as possible, no matter how long the trip takes.

Unfortunately most of us get turned crosswise and have a very rough time of it.  We spend an awful lot of our time in prayer going in the opposite direction to where God wills for us to go.  We get caught in repeated cycles, praying endlessly for the same things, making little to no progress and totally missing the sumptuous buffet that is set before us.

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.  He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.” – Psalm 91: 14-16

Prayer is not a methodology, mechanism or essence.  Prayer is not a conversation.  It is a place, a very active, alive and fertile place.  Miracles are born in this place.  Encounters are had in this place.  Lives are transformed in this place.  Destinies are birthed in this place.

Prayer is the place from which every Christian should live their life.  It is God's secret place.  Is it yours?
